Whats your advice about what I should do about the cut on my horses leg to keep it from getting infected?

my horse has recently gotten a cut just above her forearm and i caught it to late for stitches. we have been washing it and putting medicine on it and we've tried putting vet wrap over it to keep it from getting infected and to keep the flies off of it but it won't stay on. it seems to be very irritated by the flies and it has increased in size within the past few days. do you have any suggestions?Whats your advice about what I should do about the cut on my horses leg to keep it from getting infected?
if it is getting worse you need to call the vet if the infection gets to bad you will most likely have to put the horse downWhats your advice about what I should do about the cut on my horses leg to keep it from getting infected?
I wouldn't get a tetanus shot. I try to do everything before calling a vet out. My horse cut himself in what sounds like the same place as yours. We made shure we kept it clean with peroxide, betadine and wonderdust.(wonder dust helps heal flesh and keeps flys off. also try Swat around the cut

it will help keep the flys off. I tryed Vetwraping mine too but nothing seems to stay on that area;) Peroxide BETADINE and wonderdust it should heal in no time:)

tetanus shot - Betadine rinse daily for a few days. If you think it is infected then inject with a good antibotic recommended by your vet.

They used betadine on my grandmotehr when they cut her open, they used betadine on my arm when I cut it deeply. It will do your horse as much good as anything.

What type of medicine are you applying? Antibiotic ointment? If this isn't working, you may be forced to see a vet - or stable the horse and make it fly-proof using netting or fabric, then continue applying medication.
Infection has set in so cleanse the wound every few hours with very salty warm water (saline solution) %26amp; clean cotton balls. Don't rub, try more of a squeezing action to irrigate the area. Pat dry with more clean cotton balls. If its sunny, stand your horse in the sun to dry it too. We have a fabulous lotion called ';Yellow Lotion'; which heals deep wounds %26amp; helps prevent proud flesh from forming. Otherwise use a special horse product because human ointments can damage a horse's skin which causes an even bigger problem. Ask your vet or local saddlery. If its really bad your vet may need to prescribe antibiotics but I've had really good results even with shocking wounds with just saline, sun %26amp; Yellow Lotion. Keep the area covered with dressing %26amp; tape to eliminate flies. Some creative bandaging or even masking tape may be required if its a really tricky area. U can use insect repellent, but don't let it get on the wound. Depending upon the area I've had good results using far infrared therapy too. There's another product we use called ';Purple Spray'; which is good for wounds %26amp; incorporates a fly repellent for horses.
