Advice about a covering letter for a job application?

I'm applying for a Training and Recruitment manager's job, and I was wondering how long the covering letter should be. The advert asks for only a covering letter and a CV. Most websites seem to say the covering letter should only be 1 page, is this really long enough?Advice about a covering letter for a job application?
Personally I am of the opinion that letters are excellent, provided they are presented utilising excellent syntax and spelling (always use a spoil chequer!).
