I love pugs and think they are really cute but i have heard rumors about they stink and are bad for children. Is this true? 10 points for best information on pugs, all you know.Do you have good advice about pugs?
Pugs are a great pet for a family with children. Puppies, as with any puppy is going to be playful and may jump, scratch etc. The key is for a child to be taught how to treat the dog properly and respectful. It is always best to have a seperate private area for your dog to retreat to if it is stressed and wants to rest (crate, spare room, etc where the children wont be)
The 'stink' you refer to only occurs in Pugs that are not properly cared for, in the form of routine bathing, cleaning of ears and wrinkles.
The ears will get dirty often and require, along with the wrinkles of the face, cleansed a couple time weekly.
A Pugs personality is that of a clown, they can be stubborn with training and require patience and routine.
Also be aware of their need for temperature control. Being a brachycephalic breed, they do not handle extreme hot or extreme cold. A/C is almost mandatory in the summer months. Walks and playtime should be scheduled in mornings and eary evening when the sun is not up in full force.
Also research and be aware of the health issues Pugs are prone to. Be sure to choose a breeder that is well versed in these issues, only breed dogs that are not affected, and offer health guarantees for immediate health as well as coverage for genetic defects.
Patellar luxation, seizure disorders, eye issues, stenotic nares to name a few.
Pugs are also very prone to eye injuries.Do you have good advice about pugs?
My daughter has a pug. It is around children aged 2 to 13. No problems in that area. He is very sweet and gentle. Pugs do a lot of snorting and snoring when they sleep because of the little pushed in face. You have to gently wash their face every day wiping out the wrinkles. If you don't do this they will smell bad. That is because they get food and saliva etc in those wrinkles and they can't clean it out themselves. I love the little guy. He is a very well behaved little dog so hope yours will be too. Hope this helped.
